Remember the deeds of the Lord

New Wells - Weekly Update-01 Header.png

Dear church family

Psalm 77 came up in my readings last week and It struck me that this Psalm written thousands of years ago is so relevant for us today.  The writer of this Psalm was Asaph, a worship leader appointed by King David.  He had clearly hit some hard times and was seemingly pouring his heart out to God in the long lonely and silent hours of the night.  The following lines hit me between the eyes.

'You kept my eyes from closing;
    I was too troubled to speak.'

Have you ever been in a place where however hard you try, sleep will not come and your spirits are so low that you can't even bring yourself to pray?  Perhaps you can recall laying there watching dark turn to light through the chinks in the curtains; still sleep remains elusive and your thoughts are chasing each other around your head with no resolution in sight.   This is where we need each other.  Even the most seasoned prayer warrior will face times like these and we all need those few trusted praying friends who can stand in the gap for us.  Who are your praying friends?  If you don't have any, I strongly suggest that you find some, because even Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold up his arms during the battle with the Amalekites (Exodus 17:12).

What I love about many of these psalms is that we are pointed toward a helpful way forward.  In this Psalm, Asaph remembers his songs – these are worship songs he has written in the past which recount the goodness of God, for example, Psalms 75 & 76.  These remind him of all the times God has been good to him,

Then I thought, "To this I will appeal:
    the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 I will consider all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds."

It is a great strategy when we are struggling, to play upbeat worship songs – to choose as an act of will, to worship and to 'remember the deeds of the Lord'.  This is definitely the benefit of keeping a record of the ways that the Lord has blessed us so that in the tough times, we can remind ourselves that he is still God and that if he has blessed us in the past, he will do so again.

Let us remind ourselves today of the many promises of God in Bible to which we can turn.  Deuteronomy 31:8 tells us, 'The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you, he will never leave you nor forsake you.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.'  Jesus himself said, 'And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.' (Matt. 28:20).

Be encouraged and be blessed.

Much love,

Paula
