God's word is alive and active
Dear church family
My back up plan if ministry didn't work out was to start my own coffee shop. When ministry got difficult, I would daydream about this coffee shop. I would plan the décor, the feel of the shop, think about the potential of hosting acoustic worship nights and alpha and all sorts. I also thought about the name… My little imaginary coffee shop would be called 'He brews' which would be ironic because it would be a female owned coffee shop, Hebrews is a book in the Bible and coffee is of course brewed. I always enjoy the joke, 'How does Jesus make his coffee? … Hebrews it.' So, all in all, I was quite proud of coming up with this name for my imaginary coffee shop.
The book of Hebrews is an incredible book. In my Bible reading plan I am currently reading Hebrews which I find very exciting, and its teachings are challenging and encouraging me in my own journey. Yesterday I was reading chapter 4 and verses 12-13 struck me.
'For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.'
Now at first glance this is quite an intense passage, and I recognise I'm someone that quite enjoys the more intense stories and passages. What struck me was the power that comes from the word of God. His word (the Bible) is alive and active; it is sharp and cuts through a lot of our rubbish. Sometimes it holds up a mirror to our own failings, sin and imperfections which can be hard to face. However, when a mirror is held up to our faces, when our motives and desires are laid bare before God, when His Spirit convicts us of wrong or our failings, it is an opportunity for us to be met with mercy and grace. Sometimes the God's word cuts us like a sword when we have done wrong because it is an opportunity for us to repent, receive grace and be made whole. God cares so much about us that He does not want us to stay in our brokenness, but His desire is for us to be whole, righteous, and holy. He sees it all anyway, he sees our motives, our desires, our failings, every single part of us including the parts we would rather hide from and His declaration in His word is that we are His beloved, children and chosen ones. How amazing is that!
Lots of love,
Katie
