Utter Obedience
Dear ::first_name::,
I am currently reading through the books of Samuel and the story of Saul's demise leading to David stepping into his role as God's anointed king. What has struck me as I've been reading is how often David inquires of God. In 1 Samuel 23, David is told that the Philistines are attacking Keilah and rather than rushing off to the aid of Keilah, David asks the LORD, 'Shall I go and attack these Philistines?'. God tells him to go and attack the Philistines and save Keilah but David's men are afraid they say, 'Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!' David's response to this is going back to God and inquires again. God replies by telling David, 'Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand.' Because David inquired of God he could go down to Keilah with confidence that God was going deliver the Philistines into their hands. He could encourage his men with this promise knowing, through experience, that God is faithful and is true to His word.
After David saves the town of Keilah, Saul decides to take this as a sign that God had delivered David into his hands and heads to Keilah with all his forces to besiege David and his men. David hears of all this and goes straight to God asking whether the town will surrender him to which God tells him that they will. Which is rubbish considering David literally just saved them from the Philistines! So, David moves on from Keilah and is able to evade capture.
There are two things that stick out to me from this story and the other stories of David inquiring of God:
1. We can go to God about everything. I think God loves it when we go to him with any decision we are making. We can seek His opinion about every little thing in our life and give him space to speak into it. I know in my own life when I know something has God's stamp of approval I have been able to do terrifying things because I have confidence that God is in it and I know He wants the absolute best for me. The more we inquire of God the more it becomes a habit to prioritise His voice in our decisions. As followers of Jesus, His voice is the most important voice in our lives and it is our calling to listen to His leading and go where He calls us.
2. Walking in obedience leads to victory! David inquired of God and was able to save a town from the Philistines. David's men were unsure and afraid yet because God said they would win they went on ahead and saw a victory. God often leads us on paths that seem uncertain and frightening yet if God is with us we will see triumph! We need to be bold and if God has told us to do something, we do it, even if we are absolutely petrified. Obedience does not require us feeling amazing about it, obedience is saying yes to God no matter what. When I think about the future of New Wells, I know that God has amazing things ahead of us that may require us doing things that scare us. But if we know He is in it, we can be obedient and be expectant on the miracles and wonders we will see!
'Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you!' Joshua 3:5
Lots of love,
Katie
